Balmain

Balmain's lively Darling street is just 3 minutes walk from the house, with great cafes, wide variety of bars, boutiques and high street chains.  You can easily have a great time locally, but, if you are using it as a base for exploring the wider reaches of Sydney, you are in a great place as there are plenty of buses and ferries that can get you into the city in about 15 minutes.  One of the best things about Balmain is having the friendly feel of a community and the closeness to the  city in one package.

Eating Out

Darling Street has so many restaurants and bars it would be surprising if you could not find something you liked.  There are Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Sushi, Mexican, Australian, Greek and fish and chip options all within a short walk from the house.  We love Bertoni for coffee (and mini doughnuts), the Indian Palace for great curry, Rosso Pomodoro for exceptional pizza (often voted in the top 10 pizza places in Sydney), Mantecato for delicious Italian and the Royal Oak for a great selection of pub grub.  Some of the above are off the beaten track, so google or ask us for directions first.

Getting Around

Balmain has many parks - the closest is about 200 meters away - and is a great start point for many good runs.

James can provide running or cycling routes from 5km to 30km (which will take you to Bondi and back), and cycling only routes up to 60km.
A good selection of buses will take you from Darling Street to the CBD in about 15 minutes, and from there, Bondi, Bronte, Taronga Zoo and Manley are one connection away.

Part of the charm of Sydney is its ferries and Balmain has two wharves to choose from:  Thames Street is a 7 minute walk and Balmain East 20 minutes (or a quick trip on the bus).
